Time Will Die SOTM #3

This month we’re doing something a little different.  We mentioned earlier that we’re donating a song to the Songs for the Cure compilation for 2010.  So if you’d like to get our song for the month of March, you can go here.  Its an eclectic collection covering a bunch of different styles.  And everything goes to the American Cancer Society.  We’ll be back in April with more free music, but for now head on over to CancerDrive.org and donate to a good cause.

Hellllo February.  I don’t know about you all but I’m ready to be done with winter.  One of my favorite things about Kansas is that we get all four seasons.  But winter this year has been brutal!  Like a lot of our songs this one is a little bit depressing and a little bit hopeful.  Its how we roll… :)

“Daybreak” has nice mix of electronic, effected, and natural sounds.  Makes kind of a neat soundscape.

PS I’ll update the podcast Monday morning, so if you click subscribe and don’t see the song don’t panic.

Free Download: I Have A Dream

The week is up but you can still purchase the song online from various places.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day we decided to repost our song “I Have A Dream.”  I can think of few people that spoke with as much conviction, passion, and charisma as MLK Jr.  We used sound bytes from his “I Have A Dream” speech and that is really what makes this song so powerful.

For those of you that missed it the first time, we originally posted this in June of 2009. It was our 37th song out of the 52 songs in our song a week project.  You’ll be able to download it for free for the next week, and after that you’ll be able to purchase it from the usual places.

And… we’re back.  It was a nice break, but we’ve been itching to make some music.  If you forgot or if this is your first time here we’ll be writing, recording, and releasing a new song every month for 2010.  We’ll make the songs available the first Monday of every month.  After the first month the songs will be available for sale, and at the end of the year we’ll compile them all into an album.  If you like what you’re hearing then make sure and check out our store or itunes or amazon as we’ve got some fun songs from our song a week project.  So enough yakking…

This month’s song is called “Fell for You”.  Some of the instrumentation used: acoustic guitar, canvas sack, napkin, spray bottle, coins… you get the idea.  Hope you like it and we’re really excited to see what comes out of us in 2010.  Happy New Music Monday! Read the rest of this entry »

I don’t know what we expected when we first started up this song a week thing.  Our “side project” to Moving Rushmore quickly became the “main project”.  Now 52 songs later here we are.  Its been an awesome experience and its really neat to look back over the past year and see/hear the progression of our music.  Although there was the occasional mediocre song, for the majority of the time we put out some pretty cool stuff.  I know that I can look back with a sense of pride over what we’ve accomplished in the past year.

We’re really grateful to all of you that have told your friends about us, bought our music, blogged about us, came to our shows, and enjoyed our music.  Just because we’re done with the song a week doesn’t mean that we’re done making music. You could say that we’ve only just begun…

You’ll especially want to check back next week as we’ve got something special brewing.

If you’ve enjoyed this song a week project and want to keep up with us, this would be a great time to sign up for our e-mail list, follow us on twitter, sign up for our podcast and/or friend us on facebook.  We’re still going to be active so if you want to know what we’re up to then those are some good ways to keep in touch.

Quick note: Next week is our LAST song in our song a week project!  Stay tuned!

This last week I was listening to science Friday on NPR and there was a professor being interviewed about his idea to send astronauts on a one-way mission to mars.  He was talking about how much money we would save if we didn’t have to worry about the trip back home.  He said, “To boldly go where no one has gone before does not require coming home again.”

This got me thinking.  Can you imagine what Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were thinking being the very first people to step foot on the moon.  Outside of educated guesses they had no idea what would come of them when they opened that hatch.

As I searched the web for some audio clips to use for this song, I came across this speech that was revealed in 1999.  It was to be used in the event of a disaster that would maroon the astronauts on the moon.

Well here we are #50!  Pretty crazy!  We only have 2 more songs to go before we have done this song a week thing for a whole stinkin’ year!  We’re pretty stoked.  We set out to do this for 6 months but kept going.

Tim sent over the keyboard and rhythm tracks and I went to work Saturday putting words and a melody to it.  It was a lot of fun to write lyrically.  What do you think it’s about?

PS Today is the last day to try to win a free Tee.

I recently read a book that has been like a tornado through my soul, tearing out old rusty ideas and ideologies that I’ve held onto for years.  Like many people feel after having an uprooting like this, going back to the way things were isn’t an option.  In this case I’m glad for that.
Tim wrote these lyrics and after I sang them I realized that this is how the last week has felt for me.  I picked up the book Blue Like Jazz and couldn’t put it down.  Donald Miller writes as if he’s sitting across the table from you, and putting the book down was like ending the conversation with a good friend.  (Yeah, that was cheesy, but that’s how it felt.)  I highly recommend it.

As I look back at the last few months of songs, I’m surprised at what has come out of me.  Lots of somewhat depressing songs, which I’m really okay with, just curious about.  But this week a love song came out.

We put off working on these songs later and later each week and as a result, limit ourselves on what we can improve on.  I’m looking forward to going back and spending more time on this one.  I think it has a lot of potential, but because it was a last minute creation the recording quality is pretty poor.  (I ended up just setting a mic up and recording it in one pass and then going back and adding a beat.) BUT, in some ways that’s the beauty of the song a week project.  Each week is different and has lots of room for improvement.

Tim was on vacation this week in Colorado, so you only get me on this one.   Enjoy!

It’s pretty crazy that we are on week 47.  It’s been quite the journey.  This song is a very simple “singer/songwriter” kind of tune and Tim got to use his new Taylor guitar on it.  (can you tell I have nothing to say about it????) We hope you enjoy it!  Peace
