This is an instrumental that I was playing around with back in February. I enjoyed the process of recording it but when I was finished I realized that I’d missed out on a really beautiful day outside… hence the title.  The video came late Sunday evening as Patrick and I were reflecting on how much of life is missed when we don’t pay attention.

The Great CD Cover Giveaway

We just finished our 39th song so you know what that means… its time to release Volume III!  We have a slight problem though.  We don’t have any artwork for it!  So here’s what we’re going to do…

We want all of YOU to submit some of your photos and we’ll use those to create a collage for the front cover!

What’s in it for you?  Besides getting to have your pictures on the CD design you’ll be entered into a drawing for one of our previous CDs AND one of our new tshirts!  We’re giving away five tshirt + CD combos, so the more pictures you send the better!  The sweet new shirts come courtesy of Jeff Moore’s design work…

Here’s how its going to work…

For each picture you submit you’ll be entered in the drawing but there’s a maximum of ten entries unless you go the twitter route.  Feel free to send extra pictures though.

Option 1: Flickr

We’ve just setup a flickr group that is free to join and that is where we’ll be posting all of the pictures for now.  So the easiest way to send us your photos is if you already have a flickr account then join the group and submit away!  Here’s the link… http://www.flickr.com/groups/cdcovergiveaway/

Option 2: E-mail / Facebook

You can e-mail us the pictures at this email address: cdcover ( at ) newmusicmonday.com

If you’ve already got a ton of pictures on facebook then just click the Share button on the bottom right of the photo/album and send it to the new e-mail address.  The Facebook sharing thing hasn’t fails more than it works.  Don’t blame us… take it up with Zuckerberg.

Option 3: Twitter

Use your cellphone and take a picture of whatever you are doing RIGHT NOW and post it to twitter using twitpic (or some similar service) and add #newmusicmonday.com so we’ll see it.  If you use this method your entry will count for double so you could get up to twenty entries! PS Squarespace is giving away a free iphone every day as well so you could just double up and use #squarespace and #newmusicmonday at the same time to double your chances at free stuff.

You can only win once.  Winners will be chosen at random.  We reserve the right to use or not use the pictures you submit, but we’ll try to use as many as possible.  Even if we don’t use all your pictures that won’t hurt your chances in the drawing.  And keep the submissions clean.

We’ll have the drawing on Friday, July 3 and post the winners on newmusicmonday.com and then we’ll ship out the goods once the winners let us know what style/size/cd they want.

Good luck!

The High Line

My wife Mandy and I just returned from our trip to NYC and during this visit we got to see a brand new park that just opened a couple of weeks ago.  I thought it was such a great idea and designed so well that I had to share.  Mandy’s Aunt is a fantastic person and a great person to show you New York City.  She gave us a little background on the High Line.

The High Line is an old railway that runs throughout Manhattan.  Its a couple of stories off the ground and runs alongside and through buildings, over streets and pedestrians, and gives a very unique view of the city.  It was abandoned a couple of decades ago and just a couple of weeks ago was re-opened as High Line park.

Every little piece is designed beautifully, from the seating, to the design of the walk way.  Add it to the list of must see sites in NYC.

For more videos and info about the park visit thehighline.org.

Here in the Midwest we have had a tremendous amount of rain as of late. I’m pretty sure the farmers aren’t lovin’ it, but I am because it’s giving me an excuse to NOT mow my lawn.

But seriously, I love the rain. There is something so cleansing about it. Even the sound of it refreshes my soul. There are things in my character and life that I would love for the rain to wash away and that’s what this song is about.

With Tim being in NY this week I was on my own for this one. It sure could use his electric guitar skills to smooth it out, but all in all, I like how it turned out.

I set out to make this song very postal service-esque.  My wife Mandy suggested the idea of being seen as who we really are and not who we are trying to appear.  So I took that and ran with it.  I really like how it turned out and since Mandy and I are leaving for NYC early in the AM that’s all I’m saying for now.  Check out the commentary when it posts for more details about the song.

On NPR the other day they interviewed a guy who takes audio from newscasters and other orators and puts it to music.  He uses auto tune (software that forces any note to be perfect within any key you specify) to accomplish this.  Now, pop radio has been using this for years, but the idea of making people who were talking, sound as if they were singing on perfect pitch intrigued me.

So, fast-forward to Sunday morning.  All Tim and I had for a song was something that sounded like it could be heard in the background of a movie…  It was more like mood music than anything and so I thought it would be cool to do something like we did with “A Thousand Bars” (Listen to a sample of “A Thousand Bars”) and make it artsy fartsy.

Here is what came of that idea.

The process of taking Martin Luther King Jr’s famous speech and giving it rhythm and pitch was an inspiring experience for me.  I hope you are inspired as well!
