Front of My Car (SOTW #10)

December 1, 2008 | Song of the Week

So one bright spot about the whole broken arm thing is it’s forced me to write without an acoustic guitar. I say “bright spot” because I think I write better from the keys, and I think my voice fits better.

For this song I didn’t have a whole lot of direction until about half way through the writing process. After playing the piano part I was trying to come up with a melody and these words came out… “I’ve been thinking all night about how to say this right” and “I‘ve never fallen this far.” Now, you can go so many directions with a song at this point, but it got me thinking about the night I proposed to my wife:

I had it all planned out. I was taking her to this small pond where 9 months previous we had started dating (again…but that’s another story for another time). But when we got there the park was closed. So the rest of the night I was racking my brain trying to come up with Plan B. We drove all night seemingly aimless as I played out different scenarios in my head. Finally I stopped the car and asked her, in very non-flowery words, to marry me. And she said… “Are you serious?”
Yeah, I’ve never really had a way with words.

“Front of My Car “
lyrics by Patrick Largen

And I’ve been thinkin all night about how to say this right
With my hands clutching this wheel tight
My body’s shakin’

It must be the way you’re lookin’ at me
With those eyes that makes me want to be
So close to you that you can see
That I’m not fakin’

Lean in close because I’ve got something to tell you
It’s the first time that I’ve fallen this far
And it’s now or never, I just have to tell you
Waiting on this light in the front of my car
That I love you

In some ways I really want to run
Until this screaming heart is done
Blame the sweating on the sun
And forget it

But I’m not gonna hide
I might steal a cheesy line
About riding into the sunshine
Oh forget it

Lean in close because I’ve got something to tell you
It’s the first time that I’ve fallen this far
And it’s now or never, I just have to tell you
Waiting on this light in the front of my car
That I love you
