Silent Night (SOTW #13)

Have you ever played that game where you sit in a circle and someone whispers a short story in the ear of the person to their right and then that person retells the story to the person on their right, and on and on until you get back to the person who started it? As people add their own interpretation to the story it changes and by the end it’s often something totally different.

Well, that is a good picture of what creating a song is like for us. One of us will start a song as a sketch and then we send it back and forth and add our own flavor. The process is a lot of fun and the end result is usually far different than either of us imagined at the beginning. For this song Patrick put down the keys and vocals and Tim added the geetar and pseudo bass. We hope you like it.

Even though this is only our second Christmas song I think we’re both ready to get back to our “normal” music. Hope everyone has a great Christmas!

Drummer Boy (SOTW #12)

Christmas is in 2 weeks!!! Wow! So, we’ve decided it’s only appropriate to grace this page with some good ol’ Christmas music (done “two seconds away” style, of course.) About 3 weeks ago we asked for requests for favorite Christmas music and although we can’t do them all, here is one that Carolyn requested.

Tim had a lot of fun with all the percussion on this. We busted out some old school vintage drum machine sounds since we don’t actually have drums. This is also the first time Patrick busted out the hammered dulcimer. Enjoy!

You’re Not Alone (SOTW #11)

The last few weeks have been downers for me. I’m not sure if it’s the weather changing, the move to KC, all kinds of unprocessed grief catching up with me…or what. But I’ve just been down. And, what better way to process emotion than to write a depressing song. Right?

Like this song, I have noticed myself experiencing despair that’s accompanied with a desire to yell…but also a realization that I’m not alone.

Front of My Car (SOTW #10)

So one bright spot about the whole broken arm thing is it’s forced me to write without an acoustic guitar. I say “bright spot” because I think I write better from the keys, and I think my voice fits better.

For this song I didn’t have a whole lot of direction until about half way through the writing process. After playing the piano part I was trying to come up with a melody and these words came out… “I’ve been thinking all night about how to say this right” and “I‘ve never fallen this far.” Now, you can go so many directions with a song at this point, but it got me thinking about the night I proposed to my wife:

I had it all planned out. I was taking her to this small pond where 9 months previous we had started dating (again…but that’s another story for another time). But when we got there the park was closed. So the rest of the night I was racking my brain trying to come up with Plan B. We drove all night seemingly aimless as I played out different scenarios in my head. Finally I stopped the car and asked her, in very non-flowery words, to marry me. And she said… “Are you serious?”
Yeah, I’ve never really had a way with words.
